Biography EN

Naima Karim is a visual artist born and raised in Bangladesh. She immigrated to the Netherlands after receiving her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Dhaka University. 

She works with various mediums but as a painter, primarily she uses acrylic and oil. Depending on the subject her works are impressionistic, abstract, and minimalistic. Her inspirations are mostly the sky, but the natural and social impacts in our lives also inspire her. She was completely paralyzed in 1999, and this life experience influenced her work. 

In 2022, she created a multisensory VR experience on climate change. This experience was nominated for awards and participated in many festivals, including the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. In 2024. She won another grant to create the second VR interactive experience based on depression and anxiety among teenagers. This film was nominated and premiered at the 82nd Venice Biennale and is being showcased in festivals.

She was invited to serve as a jury member for VR award section at the Red Sea Film Festival in 2023 and the Sehsüchte International Student Film Festival in 2024.  

Her paintings have been exhibited in international biennials and exhibitions, including the 19th Asian Art Biennale and the 8th Beijing Biennale. Her paintings are also collected worldwide, for example, at Dafen museums and the Shangri-La Hotel in Jeddah.
